The Anchor to Our Souls
Hebrews 6:16-20 (NLT) Now when people take an oath, they call on someone greater than themselves to hold them to it. And without any question that oath is binding. God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind. So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary. Jesus has already gone in there for us. He has become our eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.
We can have absolute confidence in God's Word because He has given us a promise and an oath - that cannot be changed! With this knowledge, we have great hope in Christ for He is a trustworthy anchor for our souls. Jesus took care of our sin at the cross, now it's our responsibility to follow after God with all that is within us. The more we focus on Jesus, the less we will think about sin. Because of the great sacrifice Jesus made on the cross, we are free from the penalty of sin, however, that doesn't mean we can continue to sin. As we grow in our relationship with God, the desire to habitually sin will not remain and if we do sin, we will be quick to repent because the Spirit of God lives in us, giving us a desire to live holy before Him.
When we approach the Bible as our spiritual food, we will not walk away dissatisfied, we will actually crave more because it tastes so good! Just as a great dessert will pull us back for seconds, the Word of God pulls on us for more. It pleases Jesus when we take the time to meditate on the scriptures and rest in Him - it will also fuel your spirit. Rather than sitting in front of a screen for hours, soak in the Truth of the Word and ask God to reveal more to you. Jesus must remain as our anchor! He will continue to fill us with all our souls (mind, will & emotion) need - peace, joy, confidence, rest and more. Allow the weight of the world to be removed from your shoulders and enter into that rest of God!
Hebrews 4:1 (NLT) God’s promise of entering his rest still stands, so we ought to tremble with fear that some of you might fail to experience it.
Hebrews 9:13-15 (NLT) Under the old system, the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer could cleanse people’s bodies from ceremonial impurity. Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. That is why he is the one who mediates a new covenant between God and people, so that all who are called can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised them. For Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed under that first covenant.
