Becoming More Than Yourself

Happy, fortunate is he who asks that the Lord have mercy on him! Why? The humbleness and sincerity of your requests move God. The person who prays from their works, and not from their heart develops a self-righteous attitude. Thus, when we seek things from God it is the posture we take that makes a difference.

Matthew 23:27 NLT What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs—beautiful on the outside but filled on the inside with dead people’s bones and all sorts of impurity.

Not all of us will become pastors, evangelists, or leaders in a house of God, but we can still fall into the posture that the Pharisees carried many years ago. Those who walk around with a “look at me” or “see what I’m doing” attitude will fall short in the eyes of the Lord. Don’t you realize, you are responsible for you…but God sees all and judges all.

Galatians 6:7-9 NIV Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Becoming more than yourself is a process, but one that we should all strive to achieve. So, how do we accomplish this?

·      Trust not in yourself but in God. Put aside the attitude of “works only” and focus on building a relationship with Jesus. The pride of what you achieve is not becoming to the Lord. He wants to see your faith, and then the works will follow.

·      Be humble in all that you do. In Luke 18 we read about a tax collector who asks for forgiveness and humbles himself before Christ. Jesus answered in verse 14 NLT I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

·      Give and give abundantly. When you give of your time, finances, or possessions you will be blessed in return. Peace and joy will fill your heart continually when you serve others!

Proverbs 28:27 MSG Be generous to the poor—you’ll never go hungry; shut your eyes to their needs and run a gauntlet of curses.

·      Love, like Jesus. Enough said!

The growth of a person spiritually speaks volumes about their relationship with God. By doing the things to please Him, means we are being more effective here on Earth. Even though this world is not our real home, Heaven is, we should do everything in our power to live as though we are already there. Living the life God expects of us is the right step in becoming that person we should all want to be.
