Where is Your Treasure?
Treasure: something of great worth or value.
Where is your treasure? This shouldn’t be too difficult to figure out. What you consider to be your greatest treasure is what you cherish most in your life. This is evident by your priorities. If it’s work, you will do it with with all of your heart. Family? You would prioritize your time for them. Money? You would work long and hard to get as much of it as you can. Your toys? You would spend your free time caring for them and enjoying them. The list goes and on. None of these things are bad in and of themselves, but when given priority in our lives they become idols that your hearts are given to, rather than God.
I know none of us want to believe that anything comes before our relationship with Jesus. Most of you reading these devotions are Christians and the very thought of having idols would seem absurd. Unfortunately, I regularly counsel well-meaning Christians who have very little time for God. His Word collects dust on a shelf and prayer time is limited to “HELP ME JESUS!!” and that’s it...it’s as if He’s a genie in a bottle, that’s only called upon when there’s a need.
This devotion isn’t meant to bring about guilt and condemnation, but I do pray it brings some conviction... conviction that causes a reevaluation of what place Jesus truly has in your life. Is He the treasure your heart desires? Do you think about Him throughout your day, ask Him to direct your path and lead you in every decision you make? Are you prepared to accept His will... even if it doesn’t line up with your dreams? How about your time? Do you give Him the left overs or do you value your time with Him to the extent of prioritizing the most important part of each and every day for His glory... just to love on Him, listening, sharing your heart and worshiping Him in a way that He deserves?
As long as you’re breathing, there’s still time to reorganize your priorities. If you give Him first place, everything else will fall into place. Those things you’ve sought after, to bring you joy, fulfillment and peace... they are all wrapped up in an intimate relationship with Jesus. He’s waiting with open arms! The pursuit of anything else that comes before Him will lead you on a dark and empty path. Make Him your treasure! He’s worthy of your praise, time and attention!
Matthew 6:33 (KJV) But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Luke 12:34 (TPT) Where you deposit your treasure, that is where you fix your thoughts—and your heart will long to be there also.
Matthew 6:21-23 (TPT) For your heart will always pursue what you esteem as your treasure. “The eyes of your spirit allow revelation-light to enter into your being. If your heart is unclouded, the light floods in! But if your eyes are focused on money, the light cannot penetrate and darkness takes its place. How profound will be the darkness within you if the light of truth cannot enter!
Jonah 2:8-9 (NKJV) “Those who regard worthless idols forsake their own Mercy. But I will sacrifice to You with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord.”
